About the Artists

Opened in Hermanus in October of 2005, the gallery is the vehicle in which the family Fitz-Gerald exhibit their work. It is also the South African home of the internationally renowned artist David Ord Kerr.

DOUG FITZ-GERALD

Born and educated in Zimbabwe, Doug emigrated to South Africa in 1980. In 1989 he started Floriseeds with his soon to be wife Sue. It is a flower seed company based in Gauteng. As one of the worlds top flower breeders, Doug has many varieties in the world market, and many are acknowledged to be the best in their class. As evidenced by Doug winning an all America selection for one of his violas. This is the most prestigious award of its kind and is the pinnacle of plant breeding achievement.

Last year Doug and Sue retired from active participation in the business. They have handed the management of the company over to their management team, in order that they may watch their son grow up and persue their passion for wildlife.

Doug with one of his favourite leopards
Doug's favourite subjects are leopards, this one being his favourite so far.

Doug specialises in photo oils and is developing a new genre of work: nudes and wildlife. He feels this work is unique as the wild life scenes are special and the models are just gorgeous. All of the works are once offs and unique. Doug employs many computer techniques as well as applying oil the natural way. All the work is printed on high quality canvas and all the printing is done with the best epson archival inks. Doug will also offer a few limited editions on fine archival paper and a few gicle prints on canvas. Limited editions will be set at 100 and gicles at 10.

When Doug has time, he also produces a few sculptures which are cast in bronze. These are available in limited editions of 10. Doug will be offering some unique bronze lamps as well, so look out for these unusual pieces. Doug has also produced some photographic books that are unique and once offs. Bound in the finest leather with gold embossing. Look out for these, they are special.

Doug and his family have travelled extensively in Southern Africa, Tanzania and the outer islands of the Seychelles. His favourite spot is the Grumeti River in the Serengeti, often referred to as the wild, wild west, as there's always something happening - like walking to breakfast with the Grumeti pride (lions) - that certainly beats being stuck in traffic!

Doug's favourite subjects are leopards, many of his leopard pieces are on the exhibition. Londolozi (Sabi Sands) and Ngala (Timbavati) are his favoured places for leopard photography. Another favoured spot is the Chobe, just as the flood waters from the Zambezi begin to recede - the birding is just awesome, the sunsets spectacular and as for the elephants - well you just have to go and see them for yourself.

Sue Fitz-Gerald
Sue shares Doug's interest in wildlife.

SUE FITZ-GERALD

Born in Scotland and educated in South Africa, Sue married Doug in 1989 and spent many long and hard hours establishing Floriseeds. Sue shares Dougs interest in wildlife and started taking pics as well which are also available in the gallery. Much of her work is taken with wider angle lenses so Sue offers a different perspective to the work of Doug.

CIEARAN FITZ-GERALD

Ciearan is just thirteen years old and has been taking photographs since he was about eight. He has just finished his primary school at Western Province Preparatory and is moving to Bishops. Ciearans best work is available in the gallery, and at his Fathers Cape Town exhibition he sold the first piece of work. For a person so young Ciearan is displaying a burgeoning talent which will take him far.

Ciearan is a keen
rugby player.

DAVID ORD KERR

David is regarded by many as the world's leading bird artist, born in England and educated at Hertford Grammar School. He has spent most of his working life as an artist and has travelled extensively to study his subjects. He lives with his family in Attleborough, Norfolk.
In 1978 David travelled to the Amazon, where he did fish and plant drawings for the British Museum. He also assisted with a monkey breeding project at Chester Zoo. On returning to England, he completed a foundation course at Hertfordshire College of Art & Design, followed by a three year degree course at the Royal Academy Schools where he won prizes for anatomy drawing and landscape painting.

David has been commissioned to paint a variety of subjects for a number of distinguished collectors, he is currently working on a commission for the Sultan of Oman.

David has the ability to reproduce the magnificent and sometimes surreal colours and form of birds so accurately that one would be forgiven for thinking they were looking at a live bird!
